Out Cold

As Winter was approaching Lizard felt chill in the air. Being so cold-blooded She needed to prepare. She wasn't like the mammals- Their body heat came from inside. Instead she was affected By the temperature outside. In Summer she stayed warm With the strong heat of the sun. But she would feel so cold Once the Autumn had begun. Every year she searched For a place to warm her bones. So into a hole she'd go Or find some sun-warmed stones. But Winter was so pretty- There was so much fun to do! She'd maybe learn to ski Or try out new snowshoes. The white blanket that covered All the land and all the trees Was beautiful and peaceful, Despite the low degrees. So this year would be different. She would try a brand new plan. She'd need to find a way To stay warm in the cold land. It was still mid-Autumn, She had time to plot her course And begin her search For a portable heat source. The first idea that came Was to carry a bright torch. She found an old matchstick, But her fing

Walking along the steep sea cliff To see the lovely views, The Otter strolled a bit too close- His footing he did lose! He smelled the salty ocean air And flowers on the breeze. He listened to the sweet Bird songs And wind between the leaves. Watching Dolphins jump and play In ocean's foamy swells, He didn't see the dark tree root And over the side he fell. As he dropped down toward the waves, Per Gravity's laws, He saw a branch that stuck way out And grabbed it with his paws. He felt thankful for the chance That this branch did give. But also noted sadly That this was no way to live. As he hung over the cliffs He noted with a frown The new problem that he now faced Was how would he get down? "I've no clue how to live Drifting in winds and gales- What will I eat?  For way up here There are no Clams or Snails!" He swung there dangling in the wind, Regretting his clumsiness. He wished he had been more aware And avoided this whole mess. As time passed, as he ju

Surprise?

Octopus was excited! He sent the invitations. It was the old Squid's birthday- A cause for celebration! The party would be fun! Everybody was invited- Marlin, Whale and Cod- Squid would be delighted! And Squid had no idea It was a surprise party! With luck, all would come on time And no one would be tardy. Everybody was aware Not to tell their friend. Squid would be so happy Seeing everyone attend! The Shark and Crabs stopped talking When Squid swam close enough to hear. And the Clams?  Well they clammed up When the birthday boy came near. Everyone had understood, Of this secret, not to speak. Except the chatty Sole, Whose secret-keeping skills were weak. Sole had a good, kind heart, But could chatter on for days. He'd talk to everybody- Other Fish, Lobster and Rays. One day before the party, Something caught the flat Sole's eye. It was the well-loved Squid Who was swimming so close by. Now, Squid had no idea That a party had been planned. All those invited had agreed That

The Chickens always chatted All day in the coop. They had the latest info. They knew the hottest scoops. The Geese would sometimes join To hear the latest tales, Along with all the Roosters, Ducks, Turkeys and Quails. The Chickens were, no doubt, The farm's most popular. They ruled all of the acres, Living the life of stars. The Pig and Sheep were jealous. The Goat, he felt it too. They wanted all the fame That the Chickens knew. So Pig said they should try To become the new elite. The Goat and Sheep agreed With a "Maa" and a big bleat. He'd go undercover After learning how they spoke. He'd learn their native tongue And all their inside jokes. Pig would learn their secrets, Know all that they had said. And in no time at all They'd rule the whole farmstead! He'd work with his best friends To sneak into the coop. Then he'd quietly Infiltrate the group! Night and day they listened, And practiced how to speak By watching all their gestures And looking at t

Lessons

On the plains of Africa, Some wild Dogs did roam. They were a close knit pack, And had a happy home. There were a few young Pups That had a wild streak. Easily distracted When their elder tried to speak. As the oldest Dog, It was his job to teach the pack. How to work together, How to hunt and how to track. But as he would begin, The Pups would hear a noise, Or see something in the distance, And off would run the boys. Old Dog began to think On how to make them stay And pay better attention And not run off to play. "I must be interesting, Make it fun for them to learn. I must amuse AND teach For their attention to return." Off for a walk he went And in the distance, saw some Gnus. One was teaching his own youngsters, Who were observant and amused! Old Dog was so impressed How the Gnu made learning fun. All the Calves were fascinated- Each and every one! When the lesson finished, Old Dog approached the Gnu- "You're the best teacher I've seen- Can you teach me to
